El proyecto partió del requerimiento de los propietarios de cubrir una de las terrazas del ático para así ganar una nueva estancia. Algo que, por protección del edificio, era imposible realizar.

Como otros encargos, detrás de pedir una habitación más con una actuación concreta, había una necesidad por descubrir y a la que dar respuesta.

¿Qué es una habitación? 

El ático está situado en un edificio representativo y catalogado en el centro de València. La finca, de estilo ecléctico, fue construida a finales del S.XIX y no está permitida ninguna alteración que afecte a la fachada.

La superficie interior, de apenas 80 m2, se complementa con una superficie de terrazas de casi la misma extensión. La fachada cuenta con una serie de huecos ritmados, que bañan de luz el interior y dejan que las campanas de las iglesias del casco histórico vibren en el interior.

La distribución existente segregaba el espacio disponible sin mucho acierto, haciendo impracticable parte de los ventanales de la fachada, generando distribuidores innecesarios para la escala de la vivienda y habitaciones con una proporción disfuncional.

Los promotores entendían que la vivienda, aunque en buen estado, no acababa de responder a sus necesidades. Querían acoger las visitas de sus familiares, con lo que el ático debía acomodar a usuarios con necesidades y maneras de vivir diferentes, desde un grupo de jóvenes a  una pareja de adultos.

La respuesta no fue redistribuir o techar una terraza para conseguir una nueva habitación, sino desaprender la concepción occidental de vivienda como agrupación de estancias,  buscando una solución más líquida. 

La estrategia de intervención busca la indeterminación pautada del espacio para posibilitar múltiples modos de ocupación y apropiación. Capaz de acomodar no un solo uso, sino muchos.

Cuando el inmueble se hace mueble

Cocina, estar, almacén, dormitorio, lavadero y baño, antes estancias delimitadas por tabiques, pasan al interior de un mueble servidor continuo.

Se elimina la compartimentación existente e inserta un muro equipado que permite caracterizar de distintas formas el espacio oscilante que queda entre él y las terrazas.

Durante el día las paredes se recogen y el espacio es abierto y fluido. Cuando es necesario, el espacio se divide y aparecen las camas para el periodo descanso.

El mueble se materializa como una cinta de trayectoria curvilínea, acentuada por la luz que inunda el ático. El tablero contrachapado fenólico se recala para mostrar su interior de abedul, invitando a ser tocado y transformado. 

No se entiende el mueble como protagonista, sino como una suerte de escenografía para la vida, un marco que alienta a los usuarios a expresarse en libertad.

Después de experimentar el encierro que ha supuesto la COVID-19, vemos más que nunca la necesidad de superar la concepción de vivienda como una construcción estática, compositiva y cuantitativa, y buscar una arquitectura residencial, cercana al dispositivo,  que permita movimientos y acontecimientos dinámicos, cambiantes, psicoactivos e imprevisibles. Capaz de acoger situaciones inesperadas como un largo confinamiento.

SMM penthouse

The project started from the proposal of the owners to cover one of the attic terraces in order to add a new room to the apartment. Something that according to local regulations wasn’t possible to undertake.

Like other commissions, behind asking for one more room and a specific action, there was a need to tackle and a tailored solution for it.

What is a room?

The penthouse is located in a representative building of Valencia’s old town. The eclectic-style construction was built at the end of the 19th century and due to its singular façade the alteration of its external appearance is not permitted.

The interior surface, barely 80 m2, is complemented by an area of ​​terraces of almost the same extension. The façade has a series of rhythmic openings, which bathe with natural light the interior and let the bells of the surrounding churches vibrate inside.

The existing layout divided the available space without any principle, turning opaque part of the façade windows and generating unnecessary distributions for the scale of the house and rooms with a dysfunctional proportion.

The clients understood that the house, although in good condition, did not quite meet their needs. They wanted to host family visits, so the penthouse had to accommodate users with different needs and ways of living, rstasing from a group of young people to an adult couple.

The answer was not to redistribute or cover a terrace to get a new room, but to unlearn the Western conception of housing as an addition of rooms, looking for a more fluid solution.

The intervention strategy seeks the indeterminacy of the space to enable multiple ways of occupation and appropriation, capable of accommodating not just one use, but many.

Kitchen, living room, storage room, bedroom, laundry and bathroom, previously closed and individual rooms, turn into a continuous cabinet that hosts all the services.

The existing partitions are removed and a wooden ribbon is built so that the oscillating space between the interior and the terraces can be occupied in many different ways.

During the day the folding doors are opened and the space flows into an open layout. When necessary, the space is divided using these folding doors and a more quiet and private room appears.

The new ‘thick wall’ sets a ribbon with a curvilinear trajectory, emphasized by the light that floods the apartment. The plywood board is showing its birch interior, inviting to be touched and transformed.

The continuous wooden furniture is not understood as the protagonist, but as a kind of background for the apartment, a framework that encourages users to express themselves freely.

In the context of the pandemic caused by COVID-19 we see more than ever the need to overcome the conception of housing as a static, compositional and quantitative construction. On the contrary we seek a residential architecture, close to its users, which enables movements and dynamic events, changeable, psychoactive and unpredictable, able to accommodate unexpected situations such as a long lockdown.
